What motivated this smart, devious fellow to be so foolish? Probably what I call duping delight, the near irresistible thrill some people feel in taking a risk and getting away with it. Sometimes it includes contempt for the target who is being so ruthlessly and successfully exploited. It is hard to contain duping delight; those who feel it want to share their accomplishments with others, seeking admiration for their exploits.
In the real world, one of Ekman’s most important findings for journalists is the phenomenon of “duping delight.” It describes liars who find pleasure in deceiving others. Cracking the code of duping delight is not an easy task for journalists, who are usually generalists rather than highly trained laboratory researchers. That said, detecting lies and publicly exposing liars is an important mission for all journalists. Learning from Feldman’s book is a step in the appropriate direction.
Two possible explanations exist for an increase in eye contact and smiling. One is that smiling happens more often because the liar is experiencing pleasure with the act of lying which has been extensively proven through research on psychopaths, con-men and pathological liars, the second says that a smile is in fact due to stress and embarrassment which causes a stress smile.: Paul Ekman coined the term “duping delight” to explain possible reasons for an increase in certain cues while lying was taking place. For example, fear and guilt associated with lying should decrease nonverbal cues such as eye contact and smiles, but the research shows us that eye contact usually increases during lying.
